National Initiatives

There are many collaborative initiatives throughout the country that share a vision for a connected network of veteran service organizations, coordinated services, and data-driven collective impact. Start here if you’re interested in a quick survey of the landscape, along with a survey of state military and veterans’ services agencies and programs.

  • The Bob Woodruff Foundation provides tools for every type of community – finding, funding, and facilitating stakeholder groups in local communities that are willing to collaborate for impact in the lives of veterans through shared learning, stakeholder engagement, and thought leadership.

BWF works with community partners to optimize collaborative systems and accelerate progress, increasing our collective impact. Local partners in the Got Your 6 Network commit to collaborating to build a national cross-sector ecosystem for veterans services that includes private, public, philanthropic, and nonprofit leaders as equal stakeholders in veteran wellness.

  • AmericaServes is a coordinated care network that utilizes the UniteUS platform. AmericaServes’ vision is for every service member, Veteran, and their family to easily access the full range of comprehensive services required to achieve their unique goals, and to provide a first-class service experience to match service member and veterans' first class military service.

    • AmericaServes uses a Tableau Dashboard to share data on its AmericaServes Insights page on its provider reach, impact, and coordination centers in their communities with visuals and graphs.

  • America’s Warrior Partnership brings veteran-centric nonprofits together through coordination and collaboration to ensure consistent information is obtained, relevant services are provided, and national resources are utilized. AWP attacks inefficiency and amplifies the work of established nonprofits and government agencies.

    • AWP’s signature Community Integration program brings partners together to solve the disconnect between people and organizations. Four Star Alliance is AWP’s membership program of vetted community organizations providing adaptive sports, therapeutic recreation, and wellness programs.

    • WarriorServe is AWP’s national coordination platform that expands the reach of local organizations through by connecting them to national resources; local organizations can consult The Network coordination center through a streamlined process to find vetted, quality national partners if regional resources aren’t available or have been exhausted.

    • Operation Deep Dive is a first-of-its-kind research collaboration by AWP examining factors and causes of suicides and self-harm among veterans by investigating the lives of former service members lost to suicide or non-natural causes of death within the last two years to examine their community engagement towards the formation of a proactive approach to preserving the live of service members and veterans.

  • The VA Veteran Experience Office’s “myVA” Community Veteran Engagement Boards (CVEBs) were developed as part of a Veteran-Friendly Community initiative. The CVEB model is intended to enable service members, veterans, military families, veteran advocates, community service providers, and stakeholders to have a collective voice in identifying community goals and resolving gaps in service at the local level to enhance service delivery.

VA leaders committed to actively engaging in community-based efforts that maximize the collective impact of local services stakeholders, and federal, state, and municipal agencies to improve veteran outcomes where they live, work, and raise their families. This site contains information on CVEBs that VA is engaged with throughout the US and its territories.

  • Through Mission United, United Way and its partners help military veterans and their families successfully acclimate back to civilian life by creating a coordinated care network that provides a straightforward entry point, a dedicated and well-equipped case manager and a team of service providers committed to meeting all of a veteran's needs. The 211 service is the entry point for Mission United to help veterans 24/7 in communities where its available.

  • The Corporation for National & Community Service and the National Guard Bureau partnered to support the Joining Community Forces initiative (formerly known as Inter-Service Family Assistance Committees). Typically initiated by the National Guard in each state, the goal of each JCF is to expand local community capacity by maximizing the impact of local resources to better support service members, veterans, and their families.

Understanding that no one organization has all of the answers, the Community Blueprint Network was launched in 2012 to develop local forums bringing stakeholders and community leaders together to learn and share best practices. America’s Promise Alliance, American Red Cross, Blue Star Families, Give an Hour, Military Child Education Coalition, ServiceNation: Mission Serve, and the Veterans Innovation Center formed an advisory council to oversee implementation of the initiative.

A critical component of the Community Blueprint Network initiative was the AmeriCorps Veteran Leader Corps, which was run by Points of Light to engage veterans as part of the solution. AmeriCorps VLC members were placed in locations across the country to expand local community capacity through local JCF initiatives.
